The Four Seasons – The Israel Museum

Memovan 4, at The Israel Museum – The Four Seasons exhibition

The Four Seasons, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem,

Curator: Shlomit Steinberg

Opening: December 28, 2010 – October 22, 2011

The depiction of the seasons of the year is at the core of this exhibition, featuring European art from the 17th century onward. The exhibition will examine the connection between art, mythology, and folklore in an agrarian society dependent on the cycle of the seasons. Furthermore, the exhibition will follow the changes in the theme’s depiction by a modern urban society. On display in the exhibition are paintings, prints, sculptures, photographs, and Meissen porcelain figurines – mostly from the Israel Museum’s collection – by Peter Brueghel’s workshop, Gerard de Lairesse, Isaac I. Levitan, Camille Pissarro, Auguste Rodin, Lesser Uri, Eldar Farber, and Yuval Yairi.

Purity & Danger

“Zemack Contemporary Art Gallery’s inauguration exhibition aims at exploring the powerful figurative icon of the female body. The exhibition presents diverse visual aspects of examining the ‘genderized’ body, vacillating along the tense axis of desecration and sanctification, visual taboo, seduction and purity.

The female body’s entry into the space of the artwork (be it video art, painting, photography or any other medium) is a momentous entry. Due to its being positioned in a conflictive place in the patriarchal culture, overloaded with “otherness”, the female body is spontaneously grasped as a soft platform for trial and error, drafting, kneading, squeezing, twisting, pinching, and pain”.
